London mayor backs talks between TfL and Uber

Following an apology in the London paper, the Evening Standard, by Dara Khosrowshahi on behalf of Uber, the mayor of the city, Sadiq Khan, has asked the Transport for London (TfL) to meet the Uber CEO for talks to discuss the revocation of the company’s license to operate in the capital. With Sadiq Khan also being the chairman of TfL, it’s extremely likely that the next step will be talks between Uber and TfL.

Mr. Khan welcomed the apology from Uber’s new CEO, saying:

“Even though there is a legal process in place, I have asked TfL to make themselves available to meet with him.”

Despite being the chairman of TfL, the London mayor thinks it would be improper for him or any other politicians to interfere with the matter and therefore won’t meet for discussions with Uber on behalf of TfL; instead, somebody else at the body will be given that assignment. Fred Jones, a senior executive at Uber had said that the company was eager to hold talks with officials from TfL as soon as possible.

In the open letter that Uber’s CEO published on Wednesday, there was one caveat in one of the paragraphs: the CEO claimed that Uber will never be perfect. It’s possible from this remark that Khosrowshahi could be expecting more trouble for the company in the future, but so far he’s off to a good start in repairing the damage done to the company while under previous leadership.
