Windows 10 build 14393.479 breaks tap-to-pay, according to known issues

Earlier this week on Tuesday, Microsoft released Windows 10 build 14393.479 for both PCs and phones to the Release Preview ring. As is the usual case when it comes to cumulative updates for Insiders, there was no changelog that was made available, or at least not right away.

In fact, the company has been promising a changelog for days. In fairness, the team was coming back from a holiday weekend, but it's still very unclear as to why it's so hard to offer release notes at the same time as releasing a build.

Today, there are finally some notes available. It's only the known issues, so we still don't know anything about what has been fixed or improved, but it's better than nothing.

In fact, there's really only one known issue, which should affect a small amount of Windows 10 Mobile devices:

Wallet tap to pay capabilities have been disabled due to a bug in OS build 14393.479.

Tap to pay will be fixed in the next Release Preview OS flight. You will need to re-add any credit cards that have been deleted.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and hope that you will continue to use Wallet for tap to pay.

Microsoft Wallet's tap-to-pay functionality still hasn't been expanded beyond the Lumia 650, 950, and 950 XL, despite having been available since June. It also supports a limited amount of banks, with big names such as Chase held back until 2017.

Of course, the good news is that PCs are unaffected by the issue, as are most Windows phones. This also implies that there will be another Release Preview build between now and when the Production ring (non-Insiders) get updated on Patch Tuesday, which will be December 13; however, knowing the consistency of the Release Preview ring of the Insider Program, Microsoft might just wait until the 13th anyway.

There are likely more release notes coming for the cumulative update, as we still don't know what got fixed or improved. When - or if - we find this out, we'll let you know.
