Comcast has confirmed that it has agreed to purchase DreamWorks Animation SKG in a $3.8 billion deal, following rumors of its plans in recent days.
The acquisition will see DreamWorks Animation join Comcast's NBCUniversal family, alongside other major entertainment brands, including Universal Pictures. While Universal has released successful animated movies like Despicable Me and its Minions spin-off, the DreamWorks acquisition will help Comcast to significantly expand its line-up of animated features.
Animated movies have exploded in popularity in recent years, turning into a multi-billion dollar sector of the film industry. They offer considerable merchandising and licensing opportunities for movie-makers - from cuddly toys and other branded products, to theme park attractions and interactive experiences.
DreamWorks Animation's portfolio includes many popular franchises, such as Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar.
