Huawei's Nova 4 is also set to feature a circular display cutout for the selfie camera

Design trends in smartphones catch on very quickly, and Samsung's 'Infinity-O' displays seem to have sparked a fire among many manufacturers. In a matter of weeks since the panels were announced at the Samsung Developer Conference, a few companies have already come up with their own variants. Now, it seems to be Huawei's turn.

This week, during a live stream celebrating the 18th birthday of Chinese singer Jackson Yee, the company went on stage with an unannounced smartphone which clearly sports a hole in the top left corner of the display. The cutout doesn't seem to be very small, and it will certainly be noticed when the phone is being used.

The bright side of this is that the phone is presumed to be the Huawei Nova 4, which isn't part of the firm's range-topping line. Much like Samsung, it could be that the cutout will be smaller when and if it makes its way to more premium phones. Either way, it's a mystery whether or not this approach will resonate better among consumers than the traditional notch did.

The Nova 4 is expected to be announced on December 4, and it will be one of many phones to adopt the design trend. Other devices expected to do so are Samsung's Galaxy A8s and Lenovo's Z5s, with the latter also set to be announced sometime next month.
