Google is using CES to push its smart assistant technology to just about every aspect of the home, much the way Amazon did with Alexa last year. The newest pairing is with DISH, the satellite TV service, allowing users to not even bother with a remote.
The Google Assistant will be compatible with DISH's Hopper DVR, Joey client, or Wally single-tuner HD receiver to control their TV once it is paired with Google Home, Android phones or iPhones. The integration should be complete within the first half of the year.
Users will be able to tell the assistant such things as "change channel to ESPN," "find the Big Bang Theory," or "Search for Game of Thrones." The assistant is also capable of the usual DVR commands of play, pause, fast-forward, and rewind.
"Throughout 2017, DISH took major strides toward building a suite of voice control options for our customers, including a new DISH voice remote," DISH Vice President of Product Management Niraj Desai said in a press release. "We're pleased to be working with the Google Assistant to offer our customers the ability to control Hopper's video experiences through the Assistant on speakers and phones."
Of course, this isn't the first assistant that DISH has integrated for its customers. It brought Alexa to its products in May of last year. However, that only worked with its Hopper and Wally receivers.
