Back in May, Microsoft announced that it is releasing a successor to the now-retired Windows App Studio, named Windows Template Studio. The software allows developers to easily build Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, with focus on "high quality code generation for a strong starting point".
Today, Microsoft has rolled out version 1.2 of Windows Template Studio, following the release of version 1.1 last month.
Although Microsoft has now inexplicably pulled the blog post detailing the announcement, it did note that the major feature introduced in this update is the ability to add content into an existing application by right-clicking on it, and then choosing "add". A brief changelog of Windows Template Studio 1.2 can be seen below:
Improvements to the Wizard:
- Add new content to existing WTS generated projects in your solution window via right-click
- We will be working toward seeing how we can enable this for non-WTS generated projects
- Adjusted ordering of templates based on popularity and logical groupings
- Under the hood, we’ve done a lot of work toward localization and started some accessibility improvements
- Simplified descriptions
- Logo adjustment to help at smaller icon sizes
Feature updates:
- First-time load prompt
- What’s New prompt
Template improvements:
- Upgraded references to UWP Community Toolkit 1.5
- Styling adjustments
- Template generation post-action improvements
Process improvements:
- Added in pull request template
- Added in Issue template

Additionally, the company has also noted that Windows Template Studio has been inducted into the .NET Foundation, an independent organization formed by Microsoft which supports open-source .NET.
Microsoft has outlined a number of new features and enhancements that will be coming in future versions of Windows Template Studio, including Fluent Design in templates, Project Rome features, Ink templates, and support for Visual Basic, among other things.
Although Visual Studio auto-updates itself, but just in case you haven't received the update yet, you can force it by navigating to Tools > Extensions and Updates, and then clicking on "Update" for Windows Template Studio in the expandable pane on the left. If you don't have a previous version installed, you can download it from the Visual Studio Marketplace here.
