Sony blames PSN, Qriocity outage on "external intrusion"

Sony has today revealed more information surrounding the outage of their online networking services for the PlayStation, confirming speculation the company had been the victim of an attack from a third-party.

As the outage heads into the third straight day, in a short and concise post on the PlayStation blog today, Sony's Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold confirmed the company was still battling to bring the services back online after it was bought down on Wednesday evening US time.

"An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services," Seybold wrote.

"In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th."

The free service remains offline today, with Sony yet to provide a timeframe for resolution of the outage. The downtime -- which comes at one of the worst possible times, the Easter break -- has left many gamers frustrated with the lack of communication from the company.

It also remains unclear who is responsible for the intrusion. While the online group Anonymous was initially thought to be responsible for the outage after threatening action following Sony's pursuit of jailbreaking, they've yet to lay claim to being responsible for the problems.
