Telltale's The Walking Dead series returns in August for a final four-episode run

Telltale Games announced last year that The Walking Dead series is coming to an end with its fourth and final season, and now we have an official release date for the closing chapter. Spanning four episodes this time around, The Walking Dead: The Final Season will kick off on August 14.

Clementine will return as the main protagonist for this final installment, with Telltale describing the season as follows:

Clementine, now a fierce and capable survivor, has reached the final chapter in her journey. After years on the road facing threats both living and dead, a secluded school might finally be her chance for a home. But protecting it will mean sacrifice. Clem must build a life and become a leader while still watching over AJ, an orphaned boy and the closest thing to family she has left. In this gripping, emotional final season, you will define your relationships, fight the undead, and determine how Clementine's story ends.

It seems Telltale is introducing some new mechanics to the title as well, with the studio revealing that there will be "new types of choices" to deal with, along with unscripted combat events, as well as a new "over-the-shoulder camera system" to give players more opportunities to explore environments.

Moreover, the game's art style will be more comic book-like, and will feature 4K resolution and HDR support on some platforms. Although the exact platforms were not revealed, we can expect to see the enhancements on PC, Xbox One X, and PlayStation 4 Pro.

There are some pre-order bonuses involved as well, where Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players will receive The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection as a reward, which contains all 19 episodes of the series that have been released up until now.

PC players who pre-purchase from Steam, GOG, Humble Store, or GamersGate will receive a 10% discount, while those ordering via the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 will receive the series' first season as the bonus.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season will launch on August 14 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. A Switch version is also planned, but it will launch in late 2018 instead.

Telltale Games went through a rough patch several months ago when 90 employees were let go as part of a restructuring process, which may also have led to The Wolf Among Us Season 2 delay that was announced last month. We will have to wait and see if the upcoming title has been affected in any way due to the layoffs.
