Capcom: Playstation Network shut down costing it "millions"

The shut down of Sony's Playstation Network is approaching the three week mark and its becoming clear that the online PS3 console service's down time will cost Sony tons of money in both the short and long term. But it's not just Sony that's being affected. Other game publishers who use the network for things like online multiplayer services, downloadable content, demos and videos are also unable to use the service.

One of those publishers is Capcom and this week one of its executives, senior vice-president Christian Svensson, is speaking out on its own losses. In a post on Capcom Unity's message boards he states, " ... the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans." He added that even as a game fan he is unable to play games online on the PS3 and purchase content via the Playstation Store, plus his personal info has now been compromised.

Ultimately, Svensson says in his note, " ... the hackers appear to be trying to 'punish' Sony for some perceived injustice, and they've been effective in that I suppose. But they're also punishing millions of other consumers and businesses which makes it impossible to be sympathetic to their 'cause''.

Sony's Playstation Network has been down since April 20 after Sony discovered that a cyber attack breached the network's servers and exposed the personal info of tens of millions of its users. Sony still doesn't have a firm date for the restoration of the online network.
