While Huawei has penetrated the mid-range and high-end price segments of the smartphone market with the Mate 10 Lite and the Mate 10 Pro, for instance, it currently doesn't have a bet in the low-end race. However, that is likely to change in the future as the Chinese OEM is reportedly working on a budget device with a minimalist spec sheet.
According to XDA-Developers, which obtained access to several firmware files from FunkyHuawei, the low-end phone bears the code name DRA-L22 and it will supposedly sport an HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 1440×720-pixel resolution, though there's no word on its screen size.
Under the hood, the device is said to be powered by the MediaTek MT6739 system-on-chip with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cluster clocked at up to 1.5GHz, though it pales in comparison with Qualcomm's lineup of higher-end chips including the Snapdragon 450, 430 or 435. Further to that, the chipset includes the Imagination Technologies-built PowerVR GE8100 clocked at up to 570MHz. The processor is coupled with 2GB of RAM, though it can pair up with a 3GB LPDDR3 RAM at max, according to the report. It's worth pointing out that FunkyHuawei lets Huawei users rebrand, unbrick or flash the latest updates on their mobile devices.
On the optics side of things, the phone is likely to boast a camera with a maximum resolution of 13-megapixel and with the ability to record video up to 1080p resolution at 30 FPS. Support for eMMC 5.1 and Bluetooth 4.2 is also expected with the device. While it belongs to the low-end category, the handset is said to run Android 8.1 Oreo, which means the phone is likely to support Project Treble. For starters, Project Treble is meant to help OEMs roll out updates faster to their respective devices.
While most of the device's specs and features aren't anything to write home about, it is expected to appeal to budget-conscious consumers with a low price tag. It remains to be seen, though, when and if Huawei will unveil the phone.
