Xbox One X fails to convert the Japanese, selling a mere 1,344 units

Earlier this week we reported that the Xbox One X had a phenomenal start in the UK, thanks to data released by GfK Chart-Track, selling over 67,000 units during its first week. Aaron Greenberg, head of Marketing for Xbox further stated that sales in the US were even more impressive. However, reports that pre-orders were selling out quickly in Japan turned sour after Media Create announced official sales numbers for the console.

It turns out that the sales success of the latest powerhouse of a console from Microsoft was lost in translation, selling a mere 1,344 units during its first week of availability in Japan. This isn't too surprising, with consumers in that country traditionally favoring local brands. In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold 79,958 units, with the PlayStation 4 trailing further behind at 20,021. To add salt to the wound, even the PlayStation Vita - which isn't supported by Sony anymore - outsold the 4K Xbox One X, with the Xbox One S only managing to shift 121 units.

Even with these continued abysmal sales numbers, Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer doubled down earlier this year, stating that he will 'never give up' on the country.

As for games, unsurprisingly, Super Mario Odyssey took the top spot in Japan, pushing Call of Duty: WWII out of the way. Need for Speed: Payback failed in making it to the podium, selling a mere 20,964 units. Sonic Forces, the latest game in the Sonic franchise, barely broke into the top 10.

The Xbox One X went on sale worldwide on November 7 and has seen increasing support from developers with nearly 70 games being enhanced for it out of the gate. The console features a six teraflops GPU, 12 GB GDDR5 RAM, and a 4K Blu-Ray player that should receive a fix for its strange behavior soon.
