Google Backup and Sync update fixes sync dupes and Non-ASCII profile names

Google has quietly updated the Backup and Sync app, fixing a couple of major issues that users had been reporting on the Google Product forums. As a reminder, the Backup & Sync app replaces Google Photos and Google Drive apps across Mac & PC platforms.

The new version 3.36.6884.5911 replaces the buggier 3.36.6721.3394 one, and while an official changelog doesn't appear to be available yet, it does fix an issue where the app refuses to even start for users with non-ASCII profile names in Windows, as outlined in this Google support page.

The update also fixes an issue where certain files were being duplicated. According to a report by PiunikaWeb, version 3.36.6721.3394 was duplicating files inside folders and subfolders that were already synced using an earlier version (3.35) of the application, so this wouldn't have affected users who only recently started using the app.

You can grab the Backup and Sync update by heading here, since it doesn't auto-update. The update will also require Windows to be restarted.

Thanks for the news tip Piunika!
