Last May when Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop, it did so to widespread criticism over the lack of current USB standards, mainly USB Type-C. Surface chief Panos Panay added fuel to the fire by mocking users and saying, "We're giving a dongle to people who love dongles", and finally released the Surface Connect to USB Type-C adapter recently. He also said at the time, "The last thing I want is to take away the port they need today and tomorrow and the next day, to achieve a technology milestone where I then put a barrier in front of my customers."
But now, the show seems to be on the other foot. Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the Surface Go, a 10-inch, $399 tablet that only has Surface Connect and USB Type-C ports, and it's the first Surface device to not offer a USB Type-A port at all. Alongside of other accessories, it seems that Microsoft will be making a dongle for this as well.
First spotted by a user on Reddit (via Windows Central), there are two adapters for sale. One of them is a simple USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter, and the other one adds both USB Type-A and Ethernet connectivity.
Both of the new dongles will launch on August 2 alongside of the Surface Go, although they should work on a Surface Book 2 as well. The USB Type-C to Type-A adatper costs $19.99, while the one with Ethernet is $54.99. You can pre-order them from Best Buy at the following links:
