Some Facebook users are seeing old messages popping up as new ones

Some Facebook users are being faced with a strange new bug on the social network's website, as old messages in their history are being surfaced as if they were new. Reports started popping up on Twitter earlier today, with users mostly complaining about the fact that they were being shown embarrassing or even painful memories.

Unlike the On This Day feature which was rolled out to users in 2015, it seems that these memories aren't being brought up intentionally, but rather due to a yet-unidentified issue. Facebook itself has confirmed to The Verge that some users are indeed seeing older messages among their newer ones and is working on a fix:

“Some people are seeing older messages on Facebook.com. We are aware of the issue and are actively working to resolve it in as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

As with everything on Facebook, your messaging history is stored on the platform indefinitely, and they can always be found unless the user actively chooses to delete them. Because of that, it's always possible that this kind of thing will happen, though it's still somewhat strange that it did. If you've opened the social network today only to find things you'd rather forget, it may be a good time to delete those memories permanently.
