Evidence of Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S camera features suggest slo-mo, portrait mode, and more

It wasn't that long ago that Xiaomi teased what is believed to be the next iteration of its bezel-less flagship smartphone, the Mi Mix 2S. While its formal announcement is expected towards the end of this month, that hasn't stemmed the flow of other potential hints, such as a small front-facing camera notch on the top-right of the screen and the inclusion of wireless charging.

Now, it appears that some details about the anticipated smartphone's camera have been uncovered according to leaked firmware and camera APK source code. Multi-frame noise reduction, a feature supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 SoC, looks to make an appearance. Slow motion capabilities also appear set for a boost compared to the Mi Mix 2, which could manage 720p/120fps, with the upcoming addition set to boast 1080p/120fps and 720p/240fps video recording options.

As far as video encoding is concerned, Xiaomi's forthcoming smartphone will offer the option of recording in either "high compatibility" H.264 or "high performance" HEVC (H.265) formats. Also mentioned are parallel processing and "dual SAT" which, at this stage, remain unexplained in the software. However, the former, in the context of HEVC, may help prevent loss of image quality and allow encoding threads to start processing subsequent frames once having concluded its work on the current one.

Rounding out the capabilities gleaned from the source code is a portrait mode and an "AI scene selector" that will adapt various camera settings to suit the subject or environment being shot.

Of course, until Xiaomi's official announcement on March 27th takes place, it may be wise to take all of this with a grain of salt as far as the rumored device's features are concerned.
