Patch Tuesday: Here's what's new for Windows 7 and 8.1

Today is Patch Tuesday, and that means that Microsoft is releasing updates for all supported versions of Windows. Alongside of six versions of Windows 10, the firm is also releasing updates for older versions like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

If you're on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, you'll see KB4462923, which can be manually downloaded here. It contains the following fixes:

  • Security updates to Windows Media Player, Windows Graphics, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Kernel, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

It also contains a known issue to be aware of:

Symptom Workaround
After you apply this update, the network interface controller may stop working on some client software configurations. This occurs because of an issue related to a missing file, oem<number>.inf. The exact problematic configurations are currently unknown.
  1. To locate the network device, launch devmgmt.msc. It may appear under Other Devices.
  2. To automatically rediscover the NIC and install drivers, select Scan for Hardware Changes from the Action menu.
    1. Alternatively, install the drivers for the network device by right-clicking the device and choosing Update. Then choose Search automatically for updated driver software or Browse my computer for driver software.

KB4462915 is a security-only update that should be pretty much the same, but it doesn't have any known issues. You can download that here.

Those on Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 will get KB4462926, which you can manually download here. It contains the following fixes:

  • Security updates to Windows Media Player, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Datacenter Networking, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Kernel, and Microsoft JET Database Engine.

There are no known issues. Once again, there's a security-only update, KB4462941, which you can download here.
