Last week, it came to light that Sony's Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 would become available for pre-order via Best Buy, starting last Friday, while Amazon would start selling these handsets from May 20. With both devices packing the Snapdragon 845, 4GB RAM, and 64GB internal storage with microSD expansion, they should have many people covered as far as processing power and storage requirements are concerned. Now, a third variant of the Xperia XZ2 has been announced that aims for the top-tier.
The aptly named Xperia XZ2 Premium pays particular attention to optics and display compared to its brethren, featuring dual lenses on the rear, a first for a Sony smartphone. Dubbed the "Motion Eye Dual camera", the device teams a color sensor with a black and white sensor with information from both fed into an image signal processor, enabling increased ISO sensitivities for videos (12800) and photos (51200). The dual lens system will also enable the popular bokeh effect for photos shot with Sony's camera, however, it will be made available sometime after launch in Q3 this year.
Furthermore, not only can the handset capture video in up to 4K with HDR, it can also play it back courtesy of its 5.8-inch 4K HDR display, a slight increase in size compared to the original XZ Premium's 5.5-inch screen. The Xperia XZ2 Premium's screen is also billed as being 30% brighter than its predecessor while the unit also incorporates X-Reality technology, found in the company's BRAVIA televisions, to "up-convert content to near High Dynamic Range (HDR) for more cinematic contrast, colour and clarity."
Rounding out the devices unique specifications are a 3,540mAh battery, front and back Gorilla Glass 5, and a front-facing 13MP shooter coupled with display flash. Otherwise, in terms of similarities with the rest of the XZ2 lineup, the Premium features 960fps slow-motion video, an IP65/68 rating, and wireless charging.
At present, a specific release date and pricing has not yet been made available but the smartphone will hit the market sometime from summer 2018.
