Game developers for Sony's Playstation 3 and PSP consoles are worried that the relaunch schedule of the Playstation Store may squeeze out some attention to upcoming game releases. The Playstation Store is still down even while the US and European servers for the Playstation Network have been restored for about a week (although rumors have suggested it will come back online next week). Sony has previously announced that once it does come back online it will update its content with new game releases much faster than its usual one week update period.
While that may sound good for consumers the Edge web site reports that some game developers feel otherwise. One of them is Ilari Kuittinen, the CEO of the Housemarque studio. The most recent game from Housemarque is Outland and it has not been released yet on the PS3 due to the shutdown of the Playstation Network. He states, "My biggest concern is whether people will come back to use the system and browse the Playstation Store. On top of that, the second issue is that everyone now gets games for free .... so people might just play the free games for a while. By the time they are ready to buy something, Outland is maybe old news." Two of Housemarque's games, Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD, are among the five games PSN users can pick from for their two free game titles when the Playstation Store comes back online.
Another developer who is working on an upcoming PS3 game, who wished to remain anonymous, said, " ... I feel sorry for those that are attempting to launch games in the days following the outage, as there will likely be such a backlog of traffic that it may be hard to be noticed in the flurry of 'get everything back up and running'." Filipe Pina, the producer of the upcoming PS3 game Under Siege at Seed Studios, feels a little bit differently. Pina said, "We are all concerned with the overall situation but we think that despite all the delays and the multiple releases Under Siege will still stand out on its own."
