Openreach to deploy its "ultra-fast" Gfast network in 81 more locations

Openreach is making another push for better broadband in the UK with a newly announced plan to expand its Gfast network to 81 other locations in the region. The "multimillion investment" will bring users significantly faster speeds of up to 330Mbps, which the firm says is seven times the average internet speed in the UK. Openreach further claims that customers should be able to download a two-hour HD movie in just 90 seconds.

The Gfast network is built on the existing infrastructure and it improves the service by changing the way signals are transmitted, so it doesn't require Openreach to actually go out and change the cables. Over the next nine months, locations such as London, Manchester, Leicester, and many more, will join the existing 250 locations where the enhanced service is already available.

Openreach has been making some efforts to improve wired broadband service for UK customers, and it cut wholesale prices for it earlier this year. In addition to expanding its Gfast network - which is expected to reach 5.7 million customers -, the firm is also working to grow its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) infrastructure to reach three million businesses and homes by the end of 2020, and as many as 10 million in the mid-2020s.
