If you concern yourself with cellular connectivity at all, then you're probably aware that 5G, the successor to 4G LTE, is right around the corner. Today, Motorola announced the first real hardware to support the technology.
The Moto Z3 is the first device that can be upgraded to 5G, with the new 5G Moto Mod. The Mod uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 modem, and should deliver single digit millisecond latency, will have better support for congested networks, and you'll be able to get gigabit cellular speeds.
Both the handset and the Mod are exclusive to Verizon, which is another company that wants to be first out of the gate with 5G. The carrier came on stage to say, "We don't wait for the future; we build it."
The Moto Z3 doesn't have the shatterproof display that the Z2 Force had. In fact, it's really just like a Moto Z3 Play but with better internals. It includes a 6-inch 1080p 18:9 Super AMOLED display, a 3000mAh battery, dual 12MP cameras, and more. Oddly enough, it contains the same Snapdragon 835 chipset as last year's Moto Z2 Force.
The 5G Moto Mod is the real game-changer though. It should provide new levels of connectivity for everyone, just as 4G LTE did.
The Moto Z3 will launch on Verizon on August 16 for $480, with the Mod arriving early next year for $180.
