Sony has revealed that it won’t be attending next year’s E3 gaming convention, the news comes almost two months after the firm said that it was canceling the PlayStation Experience event this year which normally takes place in December. The move is strange as some estimates said that Sony could announce the all-new PlayStation 5 at the summer gaming event next year. Dropping out either means they don’t have much news to share next year, or they’ve decided they’re going to host their own event.
In a statement, the firm behind the PlayStation console said:
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
When asked for comment by Game Informer, PlayStation Senior Vice President of Communications, Jennifer Clark, said:
“We will not activate or hold a press conference around E3. We are looking at events as a whole and how we can speak more to our fans and continue to wow them. The timing of PSX and E3 didn't allow for that. But lots of exciting things to come, and we hope to share shortly. Some of our biggest games will have key milestones next year so we will work hard to blow those up.”
It’s possible that it decided to pull out of the event because it wants to run its own when the timing is right in order to announce a new console. In August, analyst Hideki Yasuda claimed that we could see the PS5 make an appearance by the end of next year.
Earlier today, we also reported that Square Enix was allegedly working on a triple-A game for the PS5 which could suggest the console is near and they’re beginning to turn their efforts to that platform. Only time will tell though and we’ll get a better idea in the coming months as more details inevitably spill out into the open.
