Microsoft releases Zune 4.8 software

While Windows Phone 7 users still wait for Microsoft and its various wireless carriers to release the big "Mango" update, the company has announced on its Windows Phone blog site that it has issued a new update for Zune software that links the phone to the PC. The update brings the Zune program up to version 4.8 and can be downloaded manually from Microsoft's web site. Current users can update their current version by clicking on  Settings, then Software, then General, and then click Check For Updates.

According to the blog site, much of the 4.8 update for Zune was to prepare for the big Mango operating system update. One change is that this new version eliminates the need to click on the update button multiple times in order to be sure you have the latest version. The 4.8 version will now automatically check and, if needed, download multiple versions of the software until it has installed the latest version. The new version also syncs up your media files seperately from the rest of the phone; this should speed up backup times. It also allows Windows Phone 7 users to skip a phone backup if there's not enough space on their PC to store the backup file.

The Zune 4.8 update also has a few more minor new features including 48 hour movie rentals and being able to restrict mature content via Parental Controls. The update also adds a number of new countries and languages as well as "vast improvements in text entry and sorting for many Asian languages."
