For those who may not know, Nokia has a mobile app store. It's called Ovi, and it is designed for the Symbian phones that Nokia makes. The Ovi Store has reached over 7 million downloads per day. Well actually, it's 7.62 million downloads per day, according to their blog. How did this come about? Apparently there is no longer an account requirement for free applications, making it easier for individuals to use Ovi Apps. Why would they do this? Ovi is being out performed by other app stores, like Apple's iOS App Store, which has over 32 million downloads per day. Even though they are ahead of Blackberry and Windows Phone 7, it is not much consolation for Nokia when they are so far behind the iOS App Store and the Android Market.
There is another tidbit of information as well. India had the highest number of mobile downloads, making it the top country by downloads. India apparently has one of the largest user bases for the Symbian OS right now. Considering Symbian is supposed to be a dead OS, the app store seems to be lively. Why Nokia would decide to release all of this information now is a real puzzler, as Nokia is expected to transition to Windows Phone 7 later this year.
