When Android co-founder Andy Rubin unveiled the new flagship-class Android handset, the Essential Phone, he made a point of saying that the company "wouldn't be taking reservations if it wasn't going to ship in 30 days or so".
With pre-orders opening in late May, it seemed reasonable to expect deliveries to begin around the end of June.
But by July 6, there was still no sign of the device, and the company was responding to enquiries from customers by telling them that it did "not have a ship date" available.
Today, Essential finally spoke up about the situation in a tweet, the contents of which have also been emailed to customers awaiting the new phone's launch.
Given that there's still no firm shipping date set, this isn't the most encouraging start for the $699 high-end handset, which features a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The device also supports modular accessories, and has an unconventional display with a 19:10 aspect ratio, and a 'cut-out' at the top of the screen to accommodate the front-facing camera.
