Samsung's Creative Lab launches three new projects

Samsung's Creative Lab - or C-Lab - has fostered the creation of a few new products since its inception in late 2012. Just this year at CES, the company showed off some of the products that startups were creating in its in-house incubator, and today it's announcing three products that have already spun off from Samsung Electronics to become independent businesses.

One of those is S-Ray, which had already been shown off at CES in January. S-Ray is a directional speaker that aims sound directly at a desired target so that others aren't as bothered by its sound. The makers of the device, Catch Flow, were able to build a device that's just one-tenth of the size of a conventional directional speaker. S-Ray is also more power efficient than previous solutions.

The second project is PLANTBOX, a miniaturized garden solution to allow people to grow plants and herbs easily at home. The product consists of a small greenhouse that's about the size of a small refrigerator, seed capsules, and an app. The user simply needs to introduce the desired seed capsule, and the greenhouse will automatically detect what's been planted and adjust the inside environment accordingly. Various aspects of the environment can then be controlled using the smartphone app as well.

Lastly, we have AppBee, created by the For Makers group. AppBee is an AI-based research platform to connect clients - businesses, in this case - and users based on usage patterns of mobile devices. Once users opt into the data collection, the service will analyze how they use their mobile device and match them to suitable clients. AppBee hopes to provide better results than survey-based research while also being more cost-efficient.

All three of the above startups have spun off from Samsung Electronics, following a three-month period of business consulting and mentoring programs. As of May 31, they are no longer a part of Samsung. However, it remains to be seen when or if these products will actually make it to the hands of consumers, as product launches haven't been announced yet.
