Nvidia releases GeForce 388.31 WHQL driver for Battlefront II, and more

Following up on its 388.13 driver at the end of October, Nvidia has now released the 388.31 WHQL driver, which adds optimizations for, among others, Star Wars Battlefront II.

With this release, the company is giving its 'Game Ready' stamp for the following games:

  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • Call of Duty: WWII
  • Destiny 2
  • Forza Motorsport 7
  • Injustice 2
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of War
  • Need for Speed Payback
  • Star Wars Battlefront II
  • The Evil Within 2 - this is written as 'The Evil Within' in the release notes
  • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Beyond the optimizations above, here are the other new features:

  • Added support for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti.
  • Added support for OpenGL 4.61
  • Added NVIDIA GameStream support for HDR under Windows 10
  • Added Fast Sync support for SLI Fast Sync under SLI is available only on the following 'bridged' SLI configurations:
    • NVIDIA Maxwell GPUs: Any resolution less than 4k
    • NVIDIA Pascal & later GPUs: Any resolution
  • Implemented improved behavior for full-screen Vulkan swapchains using VK_KHR_win32_surface.

This optimization will cause more events that trigger an out-of-date swapchain, such as when entering or leaving full-screen mode (typically by pressing Alt+tab). Applications that do not properly respond to the VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_DATE_KHR return code may not function properly when these events occur. See the WSI Swapchain section of the Vulkan specification.

  • Added support for the DirectX Intermediate Language (DXIL)
    • Includes full support for DirectX 12 Shader Model 6.0, features such as Wavemath, and the DirectX Shader Compiler.
    • Supported only on NVIDIA Kepler and later GPUs

SLI profiles have been updated for:

  • Escape From Tarkov
  • EVE Valkyrie - Warzone
  • Lawbreakers
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
  • Snake Pass
  • Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017)

These are the highlighted issues fixed (more info can be found in the release notes):

  • Micro-stuttering occurs in games when GPU monitoring tools are monitoring GPU power (“Power” monitoring enabled). [2016377]
  • [GeForce GTX 1080][eGPU][notebook]: NVIDIA driver could not find compatible graphics hardware on the Alienware Amplifier. [2010511]
  • [3D Vision Notebook]: There is no “Set stereoscopic 3D" link available in the NVIDIA Control Panel. [200341834]
  • [GeForce GTX 970M][]Notebook][Pattern Design Software]: Objects drawn in the application are not visible. [1992543]

And finally, here are the known issues:

  • [SLI][GeForce GTX 780 Ti]: There is no display output when connecting the DisplayPort and two DVI monitors. [1835763]
  • [GeForce TITAN (Kepler-based)]: The OS fails after installing the graphics card on a Threadripper-enabled motherboard. [1973303]
  • [Kepler GPUs][StarWars Battlefront II]: The system hangs when launching the game in DirectX 12 API mode. [200362843]
  • [Windows 10 Fall Creators Update]: Color settings made in the NVIDIA Control Panel are not preserved across a system reboot or restart. [2009433]
  • [Windows 10 Fall Creators Update][HDTV]: 12 bpc is automatically applied even on HDTVs that support only 8 bpc, resulting in a scrambled display. [2007663] To work around, open the NVIDIA Control Panel->Change Resolution page, select “Use NVIDIA color settings”, then set the Output color depth to 8 bpc. 
  • When upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, the system fails to retrieve the installed WHQL display driver. [1024416] See the Microsoft KB article KB2743349 https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2743349.
  • Fixed Frame Rate Games

Some games and applications are designed to run at a fixed frame rate, and consequently do not take advantage of NVIDIA G-Sync. To prevent issues, G-Sync may be disabled for those applications.
