Foldable devices seem to be the next big thing in the smartphone race, with Samsung reportedly planning to release such a phone next year. Microsoft also figured in similar reports with the rumored Andromeda device while Lenovo was recently spotted showing off a prototype device with a flexible display.
While all these reports remain rumors as they are, LG has now confirmed that it is working with partners to develop a foldable phone, though the release date remains uncertain. The goal of the collaboration, at least for now, is to address potential challenges to the concept, according to Hwang Jeong-hwan, LG Mobile CEO. Hwang announced the company's foldable device push during the press conference for the LG V40 ThinQ launch.
The executive made it clear, however, that LG is in no hurry to be the first company to release that type of smartphone anytime soon. While Hwang's statement is the first official indication that the company has real plans to enter the still non-existent market in the future, LG was previously rumored to have received a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a foldable smartphone. Given the South Korean electronics giant's history with flexible displays, it may only be a matter of time before LG releases a foldable phone.
