Analyst: Xbox 360 outsold all other game consoles in September

Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console has been outselling all other game consoles in the United States for the past year or so and it looks like that trend is going to continue. News.com reports that Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter told investors in a note today that he predicts that Microsoft sold 360,000 Xbox 360 units in September in the US. He also predicts that Sony's Playstation 3 console will come in a distant second with 260,000 units, followed by Nintendo's 3DS console with 225,000 units, the Wii console with 190,000 units and the regular DS console with 185,000 units. The official word on consoles sales will come later this week via the NPD Group.

In addition to hardware sales predictions, Pachter believes that software sales for the Xbox 360 console totaled $306 million in September. He also believes that PS3 console game sales were second with $165 million and Wii console game sales totaled just $85 million for the month.

Microsoft's sales success with the Xbox 360 seems to have come as the expense of Nintendo's Wii console. The Wii has lost its touch with consumers here in the US. At one time, the Wii outsold both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, thanks in part to its lower price. But Microsoft's Xbox 360 made an effort to reach out to the Wii's audience with the launch last November of its Kinect motion controller camera and its line up of family friendly games. That may be one of the reasons why Nintendo is planning to launch the Wii U sometime in 2012.
