A Bitcoin scam that's been making the rounds on Twitter hit the official account for Google's G Suite productivity apps. At some point on Tuesday, the G Suite account displayed the following:
The scam alert, which was broadcast to the 800,000 followers of the G Suite account, was taken down in less than an hour after it was first posted. It falsely informs users that Google is giving away 10,000 Bitcoin to the community, and asks readers to join a fake giveaway in order to entice them to divulge their personal information.
Google's wasn't the only account hit with such an attack; earlier in the day, retail giant Target, too, was the victim of a similar hack. A government agency in India and a consulting firm based in Australia, alongside some politicians' accounts, have also fallen prey to such posts in the past couple of weeks.
Twitter, for its part, acknowledged the string of Bitcoin scams plaguing the platform, and has promised to fix the issue. Given that the breaches have been ongoing for at least a week now, and have targeted some of the most prominent accounts on the micro-blogging website, it remains to be seen just how successful the company will be in following up on its claims.
