Opera 57 launches with improved news engine and Netflix recommendations

If you binge-watch TV series but never sure what to watch, Opera 57 could be for you. The firm released the stable version of the browser touting a smarter news recommendation engine for the start page which includes a special section for Netflix recommendations that you can quickly save to have queued and ready to play on your account.

The Netflix recommendations aren't available worldwide but they’re still be available in plenty of countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czechia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States, with more being added all the time.

Aside from Netflix recommendations, the browser has a new an improved, AI-driven, news-selection algorithm that goes out and finds personalised news to display on the browser’s start page. Users can tell the AI which news topics it wants to see more or less of, users simply have to hover over a story and give the content a thumbs up or down and the AI will take note of the feedback.

Informing users about how to access the news feed, Opera’s Robert Tomaszewski, said:

“To see the news articles on your start page, scroll down below your Speed Dial folders. You will receive recommended articles by agreeing to the terms presented at the bottom-right part of the screen. You can then select which news topics you would like to see. Click the cogwheel button to the right of the topics to choose different languages as news sources. Multiple languages can be selected to make your start page an international news hub.”

Opera 57 also includes a new interface in the settings page which is more compact so users can see extra information at any one time. Additionally, pinned tabs can now be closed without having to unpin them first. To see the complete list of changes, check out the changelog.
