Huawei tipped to launch a smartphone with a cut out camera hole in December

Smartphone companies seem to be ramping up their efforts to look for alternatives to a notched display as a way to retain the front camera on a phone with an edge-to-edge screen. That's in response to those who dislike the screen notch popularized by Apple's iPhone X.

In October, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 3 featuring a rear-mounted magnetic slider that houses the front camera. For its part, Samsung is rumored to be working on an upcoming device called the Galaxy A8s which supposedly includes a screen hole for the front shooter, corroborating a patent published earlier this year.

According to renowned leakster Ice universe, that phone could debut next month, but Huawei could also be trying to beat Samsung to the punch. In a Twitter post, the leakster claims that the Chinese consumer electronics giant is planning to launch "world's first hole-screen mobile phone" in December.

The name of the device is not known for now, however, but it's likely to be looking similar to the Galaxy A8s in terms of the placement of the cut out camera hole, as seen on the image to the right. It's interesting to see which of the two companies will be the first to announce the first smartphone with a hole on the display. But the more important consideration is whether this design can offer a good value proposition to consumers.
