There may be more credence to Snap Inc's follow-up to its Spectacles wearable if a new FCC filing is any indication. An FCC filing was uncovered late Tuesday by Variety and is being labeled as a “wearable video camera.” Despite uncovering the filing, there isn't much information, as the juicy bits have most likely been sealed, in order to protect the better details of the device from prying eyes.
Although there aren't any images, there is a device description, "Model 002", which lends further credence that it is a successor. The device also has support for 802.11ac, which should allow for better transfer rates from the device to a connected device.
If you are not familiar with Spectacles, it was Snap Inc's first foray into the hardware sector. The glasses integrate with its iOS and Android app, Snapchat, and allows users to shoot videos more conveniently by simply pushing a button on the frame of the glasses. These clips would then be sent to the phone and could then be uploaded to its service. Despite having quite a bit of hype during its initial debut, the company wasn't able to capitalize, which would later become a huge problem, as it would result in tons of unsold inventory, costing the company millions.
Variety reached out to Snap Inc for a response, but as you might expect, it did not comment on the FCC filing. It will be interesting to see what kinds of things Snap Inc has learned from its first attempt at making a wearable and to see whether its second attempt will yield greater results.
