One of the biggest trends in UI design recently has been the addition of dark mode to various apps. Even system-wide dark mode settings for entire operating systems have been rolled out by both Apple and Microsoft in macOS Mojave and recent Insider builds of Windows 10. Alongside being easier on your eyes at night, some apps, like Android Messages, simply look better with the dark theme on.
As such, users will be glad to know that Google is also working on bringing the same functionality to its browser, Chrome. A new bug report on the Chromium Gerrit has Google devs discussing an option to "add [a] command line switch to force dark mode" on macOS. Comments by one of the devs also suggest that Chrome 70 will likely not include the aforementioned changes, and that we may need to wait till at least December of this year, when Chrome 71 will be released, before a stable build of the browser has the feature enabled.
There is no mention of Windows or Android in the report, though that's not surprising as the bug report is specific to macOS. While it is possible that Google's plans only include dark mode support for macOS, it would certainly seem unlikely given the company's rush in bringing dark mode to its other Android offerings, like YouTube and Android Messages, in recent months. Thus, porting the feature to Chrome on Android, at least, would seem more like a matter of when, and not if.
