Rumor: Amazon's tablet to have two finger touch screen?

The battle to fight Apple's success with the iPad's tablets has centered on making competitive products that might also be cheaper to purchase. Now, according to an article on the Digitimes web site, more Taiwan-based manufacturers of smartphones and tablets are reportedly getting orders for two finger based touch screens which are cheaper to make than touch screens that can use all 10 fingers at once.

The article also claims, via unnamed sources, that one of the tablets that will use the two fingered touch screen is none other than Amazon.com's long awaited but still not officially announced tablet device. The story adds that several companies will offer up "new solutions for entry-level smartphones and tablet PCs in the second half of 2011."

There have been tons of rumors about Amazon.com's entry into the tablet space in the past few months. Even Amazon.com's CEO Jeff Bezos has all but admitted that the company is working on a full featured tablet device that might compete with Apple's iPad as well as being a companion to Amazon.com's Kindle e-book reader. Most of the rumors agree that the tablet will have some version of Google's Android operating system inside but there have been lots of conflicting rumors about what other features and hardware the tablet will contain. Some have suggested the tablet will be one of the first to have Nvidia's upcoming quad-core mobile processor. Yet another rumor stated that the tablet will have two screens; a LCD touch screen and an e-ink screen for book reading. Regardless the consensus is that Amazon's tablet product will launch sometime this fall.
