Sony put itself in the crosshairs earlier this year after it was discovered that Fortnite accounts could not be used across different consoles, such as the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. This was due to the company's policy that blocked cross-play and progression sharing, leading to a well-publicized backlash from gamers. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida added fuel to the fire in September by declaring that cross-play was not available because the PS4 offered the best experience and shouldn't be compromised by interactions with other platforms.
Fortunately, Sony later relented, allowing Fortnite cross-play with other consoles and paving the way for Epic Games to work on an account merging mechanism slated for delivery in November. However, since then, the ability to combine Fortnite accounts has yet to materialize, so Epic Games has taken the opportunity to make an announcement regarding the matter, saying that:
"Due to some ongoing technical concerns, we will be delaying the Account Merge feature until early next year. We want to make sure that this process is thoroughly tested and working properly before releasing it to those of you currently looking to transfer purchases from other accounts to your primary account. We’ll be sure to update you as we get closer to the release of the feature, which will include a web page on launch to help guide you through the flow!"
While it has been two months since Epic Games originally disclosed its plans for account merging, gamers will have to continue juggling their disparate Fortnite accounts for the time being.
