It was reported yesterday that AT&T had reportedly backed out of a deal with Huawei to launch its Mate 10 Pro smartphone in the U.S. Now, the Chinese smartphone giant has backtracked on its intention to launch the device via U.S. carriers.
Over the last two months, there has been a lot of speculation about the launch of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro via U.S. carriers such as AT&T and Verizon. Huawei had even confirmed its intention to do so in early 2018. However, a Wall Street Journal report revealed that discussions with AT&T had reportedly not gone in favor of the Chinese manufacturer, which is likely the reason for the company backtracking on its plans. There is no word from AT&T or the other carriers about the backout, so the exact reason that led Huawei to take this decision remains unclear at the moment.
Huawei has been selling its Honor series in the U.S. through Amazon and other online retailers, and it might continue to do the same for the Mate 10 Pro as well. The company has issued a statement saying, "We remain committed in this market now and in the future. U.S. customers need a better choice, and as a leader in technology and innovation, Huawei is prepared to fill this need."
Given the dominance of carriers in the U.S. market, Huawei seems to have lost yet another opportunity to grab a bigger chunk of the pie. It will be interesting to see the company's next attempt to fulfill its vision for the American market.
