Former Uber chief executive Andrew Chapin launches mental health app

Basis, founded by former Uber CEO Andrew Chapin, has announced its new service meant to provide mental health therapy to patients through a mobile app developed in collaboration with Stanford psychologist Dr. Lindsay Trent, serving as the startup's chief science officer. Basis was formally introduced following a funding round that raised $3.75 million led by Bedrock, with support from Wave Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The app allows users to book a session with specialists trained in evidence-based approaches to mental health, with each session costing $35. But first, they need to sign up on the app or Basis' website and answer questions related to their mental condition. The startup will then look for a specialist capable of addressing the specific needs of a patient.

Chapin himself admitted that he had gone through high levels of stress in his previous companies. He said:

While yoga and meditation gave me temporary relief, they didn’t help me work through the issues I faced. The idea of seeing a therapist felt too clinical for my situation; I just needed help dealing with the everyday challenges of being human. While exploring new models for taking care of my mental health, I met Dr. Trent. We realized there was a huge opportunity to provide evidence-based solutions at a drastically lower price point.

Basis sees to it that sessions keep the identity of patients confidential and that they gain insights into ways of coping with their personal struggles at the end of every therapy. Sessions are also designed to be practical and forward-looking, according to Basis. The app can be downloaded for iPhone and Android devices or can be accessed from Basis' website.
