Qualcomm announces smartwatch-related event for September 10

Smartwatches powered by Google's Wear OS could be getting somewhat more interesting, as Qualcomm is sending press invites to the media for an event taking place on September 10. The invites include a depiction of a smartwatch and the message "set your watches", which clearly points to an event dedicated to wearable devices.

It's not clear what exactly will be announced, but the smartwatch market is certainly due for a refresh. Many smartwatches being announced this year are running on the Snapdragon Wear 2100, which is now almost two years old and is still without a successor. Even the rumored LG Timepiece is said to still sport the aging chipset.

Smartwatches running on Google's platform haven't been particularly successful, and the company has gone as far as rebranding its operating system for wearables. With most devices still running on outdated hardware, however, the market isn't terribly exciting at the moment.

Google has been said to be working on its own Pixel-branded smartwatches slated for release this fall, and it's reportedly using the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset, which could very well be what Qualcomm is preparing to announce next month. Keep in mind, however, that none of this has been officially confirmed, so we'll have to wait to know for sure.
