Amazon has said that sales of its Kindle e-reader device "accelerated" in the retailer's lastest financial quarter. In the company's latest financial results, Amazon announced that the current best selling version of the Kindle is the $139 version that offers up ads and "special offers" in the device's screensaver and also on the bottom edge of the Kindle's main screen. Currently the Kindle store has 950,000 books available for purchase with over 800,000 of those books on sale for $9.99 or less. Those numbers do no include the millions of books available to download for free on the Kindle. As usual, Amazon declined to give specific sales figures for its Kindle e-reader device.
In terms of the company's overall financial numbers, Amazon reported today that it recorded $9.91 billion in revenue in the quarter that ended on June 30. That number blew away previous expectations from Wall Street analysts. It is also much higher than the $6.57 billion in revenue the company generated in the same time period a year ago. Amazon recorded $191 million in net income for the last quarter. However, that number is lower than the $207 million the company said it received in the same time period a year ago.
Amazon made no mention of any future plans to release new consumer hardware in today's press release. However, the general consensus is that the retailer will be releasing some kind of tablet device later this year.
