Gun violence is a hot topic around the world right now, especially in the United States. A headphone maker is attempting to give those concerned about the problem a chance to help by purchasing a set of earbuds made from the scrapped metal of illegal guns.
The Yevo X headsets, a special edition of the company's Yevo 1 set, is made from Humanium metal, which comes through a partnership with IM Swedish Development Partner. IM has weapons destruction programs in Guatamala and El Salvador, and uses much of the proceeds to benefit the victims of gun violence and their families in Latin America.
While the earbuds' internals are identical to the Yevo 1, the metal for the earpieces and the charging case puts them at a premium price. The Yevo 1 set usually sells for $249, but the special edition goes for double that, $499. While you may initially think that Yevo is capitalizing on others' misfortune, you can rest assured that 50% of the sales proceeds go back to IM so they can continue their work.
"It's a steep price, but it's a statement piece because it's turning something very negative into something positive," Yevo CEO Andreas Vural told CNBC. "So far it's only been positive reactions. "We just hope that we can get the product out there to build awareness about the product and the metal."
