HTC unveils its HTC U12+ with Edge Sense 2

HTC has officially unveiled the HTC U12+, a device that we had already gotten an extensive look at after the firm accidently leaked information about it recently. Some of the new features that the firm is eager to publicise include Edge Sense 2 for one-handed use; the “highest-rated” dual camera; the BoomSound speakers, USonic earbuds, and the Qualcomm aptX HD Bluetooth audio; and the power and performance provided by the Snapdragon 845 processor.

Aside from the Snapdragon processor, the phone is equipped with X20 LTE which is technically capable of 1,000Mbps download speeds if the network supports it, and HTC says it doesn't impact battery life. The flagship device has a whopping 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage so you’ll be able to cram lots of apps on it and run several of them without any hiccups. There's also a microSD card slot to expand the storage by up to 2TB.

HTC has decided to opt out of using an OLED screen and has instead gone with a 6-inch WQHD+ (1440 x 2880) Super LCD6. The device itself is classified as IP68-rated water and dust resistant too, which will protect it against the elements. Disappointingly, HTC has only put a 3,500mAh battery in this device; while you should get a day's use out of it, we have seen low and mid-priced devices packing bigger batteries.

On the VR-front, you’ll be able to couple the U12+ with the HTC Vive Focus with phone call and notification sync. The company says that you’ll also be able to use mirror mode to turn your phone into a personal VR theater.

Explaining Edge Sense 2, which allows you to use the phone with one hand, HTC said:

“[Edge Sense 2 is a] new touch feedback experience turn the edges of U12+ into the easiest and most intuitive way to interact with your phone. The new Edge Sense knows which hand you are using, giving you one-handed freedom to double tap to navigate the device, hold to lock the screen orientation, or squeeze the sides for taking photos and videos, zooming in on maps, and virtually any interaction.”

The HTC U12 will be available around the world in Translucent Blue, Ceramic Black, and Flame Red. In the U.S., the Translucent Blue flavour is available for pre-order today from htc.com - the 64GB model is $799 and the 128GB edition is $849. The 64GB Ceramic Black version is available for $799. Both the Translucent Blue and Ceramic Black version are available for purchase on Amazon.com, too.

Will you be buying the new U12+ or are you over HTC now?
