Although it may seem unnecessary at first thought, there is some practicality in having a software shortcut to instantly turn off your monitor. It could prove very useful with notebook computers, if yours doesn't have a keyboard shortcut for shutting down the screen. It could also be convenient in the presence of multiple monitors, your power button might be broken, or you may indeed just be that lazy. Whatever the case may be, setting up a Windows shortcut to turn off your display(s) couldn't be any easier with the help of a small utility called Wizmo. But the power of Wizmo doesn't stop there. In our weekly tip we will illustrate a single one of this utility's potential uses.

Skype for Linux set to be released as open source

Skype is very well known software for those seeking to make video and audio calls to those they know, and is even handier considering it's available on Mac, PC and Linux. Now, however, the Linux community is about to get one step better: Skype will soon become open source. The news, initially reported by Olivier Faurax (link in French) and then Linux Crunch, came in the form of an email to Skype. It stated, "We understand that many users complain that there is no Mandriva version at present. We are happy to be able to inform you that Skype will from now on be part of the open source community.

Canonical announced the upcoming release of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition, the latest version of the popular Linux desktop distribution. Apple's Apple TV device is a rather low-profile one; even the Cupertino company itself stated that it's just a "hobby" for them, but it's certainly a popular device for those who use it. Today, they've updated it to version 3.0, bringing some welcome changes. The general UI of the Apple TV itself has been re-done, making navigation a bit easier, and support for iTunes LPs and Extras is now built-in. To add to that, Genius Mixes support is now there as well, and users can now listen to Internet radio directly from the device.
